Jon Jones returned to the top of the mixed martial arts (MMA) food chain at UFC 214 on July 29 after knocking out Daniel Cormier in the third round of the Light Heavyweight championship rematch in Anaheim, California.
In doing so, “Bones” proved to the combat world that he is still the king at 205. Unfortunately, not everyone was impressed with Jon’s dominant win over “DC,” as Volkan Oezdemir took to the chance to critique Jon’s overall performance
“That was Jon Jones, that was his style, he was doing his stuff, but I didn’t see any new weapons,” Oezdemir said on The MMA Hour (via MMA Fighting). “Of course, he probably didn’t get to display everything and yeah the fight was dominant, but DC had some good moments too. So you know, I wasn’t that impressed,” he added.
Of course, it was going to be tough to top Volkan’s own performance earlier in the night, as he knocked out Jimi Manuwa in under a minute in brutal fashion to earn his third straight win inside the Octagon, catapulting him up he title ladder.
Still, Oezdemir says he expected to see something different from “Bones.”
“The fight was great, of course, but I was waiting to see Jon Jones fight different,” Oezdemir explained. “D.C. is also one of the best pound-for-pound fighters ever, so it was also a fight between two of the best guys, so that’s why I guess.”
And while Cormier did have some shining moments in the fight, Volkan says his punches would have done far more damage than Daniel’s managed to do.
“I think it’s very different power, D.C.’s stance is not made for striking,” Oezdemir said. “The way he stands, he’s not going to be able to generate a lot of power in his striking, so this would’ve been different. I have another style, I offer another style for Jon Jones, so when my punch lands, it’s going to be different,” he concluded.
Oexdemir’s win shot him up to the No. 3 spot on he official rankings, right behind the man who could cut in front of him for a shot at Jon’s strap, Alexander Gustafsson.
Of course, that’s assuming this certain heavyweight showdown doesn’t get booked, first.
