Yes, Aleksei Oleinik is a legit threat in the UFC’s heavyweight division.
Mark Hunt entered UFC Fight Night 136 Saturday knowing that Oleinik would want to get the bout to the ground. But the veteran was unable to keep from making that happen.
Oleinik scored a first round submission via rear-naked choke in the main event from Moscow, Russia. The event aired live on UFC Fight Pass.
At 41 years old, the odds of Oleink making a real run to the title are slim, but with 57 career victories to his resume, he is climbing the ladder. This was the biggest win for the veteran in his career, marking the 47th time he has scored a submission.
It’s really too bad that former champion Fabricio Werdum is sidelined following a failed drug test, because pairing Oleinik up with the Brazilian submission specialist would be an interesting battle. Werdum was originally scheduled to meet him before the failed drug test and subsequent suspension for two years.
Jan Blachowicz claimed a submission victory of his own in the second round of the co-main event, putting Nikita Krylov away with an arm-triangle choke.
Shamil Abdurakhimov set himself up nicely in the heavyweight ranks, earning a decision over former champion Andrei Arlovski, while Alexey Kunchenko stunned former title contender Thiago Alves via decision to open the main card.
This marked the first appearance for the UFC in Russia.
Accepting a fight on short notice was no issue for Khalid Murtazaliev, as he finished C.B. Dollaway in the second round when the referee stopped the bout. The fight was the prelim main event.
Other prelim winners included Petr Yan, Rustam Khabilov, Mairbek Taisumov, Magomed Ankalaev, Jordan Johnson, Ramazan Emeev and Merab Dvalishvili.
Yan earned “Fight of the Night” and $100,000, as his opponent, Jin Soo Son, missed weight. Oleinik, Blachowicz and Ankalaev were all “Performance of the Night” winners.
