Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returned to action for UFC Fight Night: “Volkov vs. Struve,” which went down last night (Sat., Sept. 2, 2017) inside Ahoy Rotterdam in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
The promotion’s latest mixed martial arts (MMA) card was headlined by a Heavyweight fight that saw Alexander Volkov clean Stefan Struve’s clock in the third round. In the co-main event, Marion Reneau did the same to Talita de Oliveira Bernardo (recap).
Biggest winner: Alexander Volkov
After a tough stretch to close out his Bellator MMA career on two straight losses, Volkov has really turned it around inside the Octagon, winning three straight after previously racking up two wins under the M-1 banner. But, his win over Struve put the rest of the division on notice,as the former Bellator champ chopped down the towering Struve to get his fifth straight win. Expect him to move up the rankings, and get an even bigger name for in his next outing.
Runner Up: Leon Edwards
He may not be a household name just yet, but Edwards has now won four straight inside the Octagon, and getting a victory over Bryan Barbarena will help him get on the rader. Granted, Bryan isn’t that big a name, either, buy he’s developed somewhat of a cult following after upsetting Sage Northcut and then Warley Alves in back-to-back fights. That kind of attention probably won’t got to Leon right away, but it helps.
Biggest Loser: Stefan Struve
Struve is a good fighter and since no one ever has anything bad to say about the guy, he seems like a great person, too. But, he just can’t seem to put enough wins together to get him over the hump and into his first-ever title fight. Since 2013, “Skyscraper” has gone 3-4, failing to put together a streak longer than three. And as long as he wins enough to stay relevant, he’ll always have a job, but I had — and still do — higher expectations for the 29-year old. He’s had 19 fights inside the Octagon since 2009, so he better pick up the pace and try to find away to string together some impressive wins if he ever hopes to get to the big dance.
