Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight champion Matt Hughes was able to leave the hospital over the weekend, albeit briefly, to grab some sushi with longtime friend Tony Zucca.

While having a quick bite with a buddy may hardly seem like news, it was unclear whether or not Hughes was going to live less than two months ago after a near-fatal truck accident left him in a coma with potential brain damage.

With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that Hughes is barely recognizable in this “miracle” photo, in which the 43-year-old wrestler appears frail and gaunt, a far cry from the days when his muscular, stocky frame defeated the likes of Georges St-Pierre and BJ Penn, just to name a few.

No doubt he has a long and winding road to recovery, but this is certainly an encouraging sign for the former Vice President of Athlete Development and Government Relations.
