UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway was scheduled to defend his belt vs. Frankie Edgar this weekend at UFC 222.

An injury, though, forced Holloway off the card and left Edgar with a decision.

The former UFC lightweight champion opted to remain active, taking on Brian Ortega. And for the first time in his career, Edgar was finished, suffering a first round knockout loss to Ortega.

Holloway took to social media after the fight to offer words of encouragement to his rival:

“You had nothing to gain from taking that fight Frankie,” Holloway wrote. “But you took it you defended what you already earned. There’s no belt for sacrificing everything but true fans and Jersey knows no belt can outshine what you bring to the sport.

“Chin up bratha.”

It is now likely that Ortega is the No. 1 contender for Holloway’s title when he is cleared and ready to return to action.
