Renato “Babalu” Sobral is one of the top light heavyweights in Strikeforce. He is a former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion.

Babalu was a top contender in the UFC before he was suspended from the organization in August 2007 after defeating David Heath at UFC 74, when he held onto an anaconda choke for four seconds after referee Steve Mazzagatti tried to break it.

Sobral won his first major title when he defeated Bobby Southworth for the Strikeforce light heavyweight championship at Strikeforce: Destruction in November of 2008. He lost the title nearly a year later in his first title defense at Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg in August of 2009. He became the top contender again after defeating Robbie Lawler at Strikeforce: Los Angeles in June of 2010, however turned down a title match against champion Muhammad “King Mo” Lawal, who is his friend and training partner.
