Richard Perez, the long-time coach for Nate Diaz, believes his fighter should be rewarded if he takes a third bout with Conor McGregor.

Perez was a guest recently on Submission Radio to discuss McGregor-Floyd Mayweather and Diaz:

Thoughts on McGregor’s performance against Mayweather

“Well, I mean, you know, it was okay, it was alright. Because the way I see it, everybody has a different opinion, but the way I see it, with McGregor coming out, he was trying to box and trying to fight, but Mayweather, you know, 40, hasn’t fought in a while or a couple of years or so, he was kind of awkward. McGregor was kind of awkward for Mayweather. So Mayweather, he said he was gonna come out toe to toe with him, but he didn’t. And I thought McGregor did good for the first four rounds, which I thought was gonna happen, but then he started to slow down a little. But he threw some good shots in there. If Mayweather was fighting the top five right now I don’t think he’d make it through because of the way he looked that day – unless he wasn’t serious. It seemed like he was – but McGregor, yeah, he did alright.”

“I liked his movement, I liked his jab, I liked his counter-punches, he threw a good uppercut. He threw some good shots. It’s just his cardio wasn’t all there and he needs more experience in boxing, but he’s good, he’s okay. He’s got a good jab, good counter-punching, but the uppercut he landed on Mayweather, it wasn’t a real good snap, because if it would’ve been a better snap Mayweather wouldn’t have been standing up.”

If Richard was surprised how long the fight went and how long McGregor lasted

“Yeah, after watching, it didn’t surprise me because Mayweather wasn’t really himself, he wasn’t like he used to be. Because if he would have fought McGregor maybe say five years ago, even two years ago, it wouldn’t have lasted. I know it wouldn’t have lasted. He’s just been off for a while and he’s just been laying around and he knew he wasn’t going to fight a guy that’s real serious, a top 10, so that’s why it went the distance as far as 10 rounds.”

On wanting to see Nate fight Conor in a boxing match

“I would love him to fight Nathan Diaz in a boxing match. That’s what I want to see, but they’re not gonna allow it, I don’t think. But they should. I mean, that would be a good one because Nathan can really box. When it comes to boxing, just nothing but boxing, he’s awesome and he spars with Andre Ward, you know, he spars a lot of top fighters that want to spar with him.”

If Richard would prefer the Diaz/McGregor trilogy fight to be in boxing or MMA

“Well, to me it’s up to Nathan, what he wants to do, if he wants the trilogy or the boxing. It’s where the money’s at. If people are gonna pay more money to watch the trilogy, that’d be awesome. If they want to pay to watch the boxing match, let’s do it. It’s all about money, that’s their job. So they’re trying to go out to get the most money they can. That’s how they got McGregor and Mayweather.”

If Nate was interested in boxing seeing as he got his boxing license

“Well yeah, he wanted to, but he’s got a contract with UFC. And yeah, he’s come into the gym and trained here. He doesn’t come every day, but he’s in decent shape. But as far as doing this, he has a contract with UFC and they didn’t want to allow him to box. They allow McGregor, but they don’t allow Nathan. Favouritism right there. Dana White (shows) favouritism (towards) people and so I mean he does it to McGregor. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against Dana White, but it should be for everybody.”

“He can’t, he’s got a contract. He’s got a boxing license but he’s got a contract with the UFC and Dana White won’t allow it.”

“It’s not fair because he allows McGregor, and it’s like opening the door for these MMA fighters now. They should all have a right, whoever can really box should go out there and do it.”

Why Nate and Mayweather get along so well

“Because they’re fighters. They’re boxers, so they can relate, you know, and they’ve been down to the ground when they were kids. They have a good life and it was a rough life, so they can relate. Lots of times that brings fighters together when they know about each other’s backgrounds, not a guy that’s been raised up high class, get a free car when you graduate, a nice car, all that other stuff. No. These boys had to work for this, they had to struggle. So that’s probably why. I mean, that’s one of the reason’s they can understand each other, they’re buddies – not buddy-buddy, but they’re friends. You know, they talk.”

If Nate has spoken to Richard about fighting again

“I know he wants to fight McGregor cause that’s the only money-maker right there. I mean, Dana White offered him fights, but you know, come on. I mean, you’re gonna give him chump change? He’s worth more than that. And so he’s waiting for McGregor. And McGregor wants to fight him too, so now that this (Mayweather fight) is over with, let’s do it.”

On Nate being on the sidelines for so long

“They’re not giving him enough money. I mean, come on. Nathan draws a crowd, so does McGregor. So they wanted to fight again, but they got distracted and they went a different way because McGregor was calling out Mayweather. But Nathan was getting his license to try to get in there because we thought maybe it wasn’t gonna happen. McGregor has his license, they can do it. But it did happen, Mayweather and McGregor.”

“He could fight anybody if UFC give him the money. He made money with McGregor, now they’re gonna take him and give him less pay now? No. It’s like having a job and you get a job and you get a raise and then they decide to lower your pay? No. That’s not right. And that’s what they’re doing right now. It’s like Nick, same thing. They don’t want to give Nick enough money to fight, so he doesn’t fight.”

On the rumours of Nate fighting Conor at UFC 219

“Well I hear rumours about it. There’s no signed contract yet, there’s nothing. It’s just rumours. So we’ll just have to wait and see.”

If McGregor spending extra time to work on strictly boxing will give him an advantage against Nate Diaz in a trilogy fight

“No, because it’s not enough time. Nathan’s been doing boxing since he was 14 years old, 13 years old. He’s been boxing since then and doing MMA, but he’s been boxing a lot.”

“See, people don’t see this. If Nathan goes through training camp with no injuries, McGregor’s not gonna have a chance. I’ll tell you that right now. If you watch some of the fights, like when Nathan fought Cowboy Cerrone and some other guys, he was in tip-top shape, he wasn’t injured or anything, he went out there and did it, he boxed them. And when he’s in tip-top shape, he can box. I mean, they think McGregor can box, Nathan can box. Right now in the last two fights he fought him, the first time was 11-day notice, so it wasn’t enough time but it was enough time to get a win. Second time he got injured so he had to lay back, so it put him back as far as being in shape and being accurate in timing. And people were thinking, “oh, he’s gonna come back and be better,” no, they don’t see the outcome of it, the true outcome of what happened. It’s like any fighter. You know, like Pacquiao. He had a rotator cuff that was messed up. He fought Mayweather, it went the distance, but he lost and that’s what I’m saying. These guys are true warriors, they go out there and still fight. So as far as McGregor coming out in the cage if he fights Nathan and Nathan gets in shape, it should be a good fight, a great fight, because Nathan can move and he’s got great footwork and he can throw a lot of combinations and make McGregor miss, counter off of it, use his reach.”

Why Richard thinks the UFC still doesn’t want to pay Nate Diaz more money

“I don’t know. Your answer is as good as mine. I mean, I’m puzzled about it too. I get puzzled about it too thinking what the heck? Why are they just picking McGregor when they got Nathan and they’ve got Nick that draws a crowd, yet they choose one guy and they just pick him up and carry him through? It doesn’t make sense to me. It doesn’t make sense to a lot of people. A lot of people tell me that. But I can’t do anything about it, it’s the UFC and Dana White. And Dana White says, “oh yeah, I offered him a fight.”. Yeah, he did. He offered Nick a fight, two, three of them. He offered Nathan (fights too). But they’re not gonna go down on pay. If he did that to McGregor, McGregor would be very upset.”

How much Nate should get for the trilogy and if Nate wants more than the $2 million dollars he made for the second fight at UFC 202

“Oh it should be bigtime pay. This third one should be bigtime.”

“Oh yeah, he should get way more. If he fights McGregor again, a lot more. They should be together, not just a big gap. Because you know it and I know it and everyone knows that would be a draw of a crowd. I mean, it would be outrageous because they’ve fought twice already and they need that third one and people will pay to see that. They will pay. It would be so packed. I mean, TV shows, pay-per-view. You even know that. I mean, I’m not trying to put you in a corner or anything but it’s only true.”

How much Nate should be getting this time

“At least $20 million, $30 million. Come on. UFC’s making a whole lot of money, a whole lot of money and they’re pocketing it. They’re giving more to McGregor, so it’s not fair because it takes two in that ring to draw a crowd – I mean, a good two fighters. It’s just like Mayweather when he fought Berto. It was not even sold out at all. It was embarrassing. It’s because that guy couldn’t draw a crowd. See, that’s what I’m saying, it’s the fighters that draw the crowd, and Nathan and McGregor, third one would be outstanding. Everyone knows that. So he needs to get paid at least $30 million easy.”

How likely Richard thinks Nate getting 20 million would be, and Nate saying that he only asked for 20 million in the past when UFC offered him fights he wasn’t interested in

“Sure. I mean, when he said $20 million, you think he’s joking? He’s not joking if he’s gonna fight Eddie Alvarez and them, because he’s the one that’s gonna draw the crowd. And people are curious because they know what McGregor did to Eddie Alvarez. So they’re gonna be curious about what can Nathan do to him. So of course. It’s common sense that the business is just corrupt and it makes me mad that they don’t treat everybody equally. They don’t treat the ones that deserve it (fair). And he deserves it.”
