For the second time in two meetings, Leo Santa Cruz was declared the winner vs. Abner Mares.

Saturday night, Santa Cruz scored a decision victory in defense of his WBA 126-pound title in the main event from Los Angeles and the Staples Center. Three years ago, Santa Cruz won via majority decision.

“It was a great fight,” Santa Cruz said (thanks to CBS Sports for the quotes). “It wasn’t as good as the first one, but I had to be smarter. (Mares) did a great fight.”

Santa Cruz is now 14-1 in title fights since 2012, as he’s also held the belt at 118 and 122 pounds. Overall, he is 35-1-1 in his career and expected to meet WBC champion Gary Russell Jr.

“I’m gonna leave it to the fans,” he said. “If they say I’m the best, I thank God they say it. I want Gary Russell. I’m not scared of nobody. Whoever it is, let’s go.”

Mares fell to 31-3-1, adding “I fought hard, I fought my heart out.”
