The injury to Yoel Romero will likely hurt Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza moving forward.
Let’s just assume Souza is able to take care of Chris Camozzi – who deserves all the credit in the world for agreeing to face the former champion on days notice for a second time – and win his eighth straight, would you give him the next crack at the belt for besting Camozzi?
Highly doubtful when the same UFC on FOX 15 card this Saturday night features a main event between Lyoto Machida and Luke Rockhold.
Machida, of course, received his crack at Chris Weidman last year, falling via decision. The former light heavyweight champion, though, rebounded with a vicious finish of C.B. Dollaway to close out 2014.
Rockhold, meanwhile, is a former Strikeforce champion who has stopped Michael Bisping, Tim Boetsch and Costas Philippou since a loss to – TRT-using – Vitor Belfort in Brazil in 2013.
If, and it’s a big if, either Machida or Rockhold were to finish the other, there is no doubting they would be the next to challenge Weidman or Belfort later this year.
A convincing decision win likely does the same, while even a split decision win by one of them would still look better – on paper at least – than Souza stopping Camozzi.
And what about Camozzi? What if he pulled the upset and stunned Jacare? Well, that’s another story for another day.
