Yancy Medeiros caught Damon Jackson in a guillotine choke and proceeded to secure a modified version of the hold as Jackson attempted to work his way out.
Moments later, Medeiros was the winner and Jackson was out on the canvas at UFC 177.
“Nick Diaz Academy, thank you very much for the ground game,” Medeiros said. “Nick Diaz, you the man. Thank you so much for everything.”
Medeiros (10-2) earned a win for the first time since a 2010 Strikeforce knockout victory over Gareth Joseph. He had a victory over Yves Edwards changed to a no-contest after failing the post-fight drug test.
Earlier this year, the Hawaiian dropped a fight to Jim Miller via technical submission. He returned the favor to Jackson (9-1), who was making his Octagon debut as a replacement for Justin Edwards.
