At one time, Will Brooks and Eddie Alvarez were locked in for a showdown in the Bellator cage.
However, that never happened.
Now that Brooks has joined the new UFC lightweight champion in the UFC, he has a chance to make that fight happen. The journey to becoming the No. 1 contender started Friday night with a decision win over Ross Pearson at The Ultimate Fighter 23 Finale.
Brooks (18-1) was still the reigning Bellator lightweight champion when the promotion released him. The Chicago native and American Top Team-trained fighter had stated plans to become a free agent when his contract expired in July.
As soon as Bellator let him go, the UFC signed Brooks to replace James Krause vs. Pearson. And after his win, Brooks issued a challenge to Alvarez, who won the belt Thursday night with a first round finish of Rafael dos Anjos.
“Eddie Alvarez, you got away from me in another organization, but I’m coming for that belt,” Brooks said.
