This Week In MMA: Ronda Rousey Shines, Anderson Silva Unifies, GSP-BJ Penn I

Plenty to review in the latest edition of “This Week In MMA” as we enter the month of March.

Anderson Silva unified the UFC and PRIDE middleweight titles with his victory over Dan Henderson, Team USA reigned supreme over Team Canada despite Georges St-Pierre downing BJ Penn and Randy Couture became UFC heavyweight champion by topping Tim Sylvia during this week.

In Strikeforce, Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate put female MMA on their backs and headlined a card from Columbus, Ohio for the female bantamweight belt. Also, Bellator MMA debuted on MTV2.

Below is a look at events that took place between March 1-8:

The Ultimate Fighter China Finale: Kim vs. Hathaway

The UFC invaded China on March 1 last year to crown the first Ultimate Fighter: China winner. In the welterweight final, Zhang Lipen earned a split decision over Wang Sai. The other tourney final was postponed due to an injury.

In the main event, Dong Hyun Kim landed a spinning back elbow on John Hathaway to score a first round knockout victory.

Other winners were Matt Mitrione, Hatsu Hioki, Yui Chul Nam, Vaughan Lee, Wang Anying and Mark Eddiva.

UFC on FUEL TV: Silva vs. Stann

Wanderlei Silva made his return to Japan on March 3, 2013 in the main event of UFC on FUEL TV, going toe-to-toe with Brian Stann. “The Axe Murderer” finished off the former WEC champion in the second round.

Mark Hunt knocked out Stefan Struve, Yushin Okami claimed a split decision from Hector Lombard and Diego Sanchez did the same vs. Takanori Gomi.

Other winners were Rani Yahya, Dong Hyun Kim, Brad Tavares, Takeya Mizugaki, Kazuki Tokudome and Hyun Gyu Lim.

UFC on FX: Alves vs. Kampmann

The semifinals in the first-ever UFC flyweight tournament went down March 3, 2012 from Australia. Joseph Benavidez advanced by finishing Yasuhiro Urushitani, but the other semi between Demetrious Johnson and Ian McCall was eventually ruled a majority draw after a scoring error.

Johnson would go on to win the second encounter and the title.

Martin Kampmann choked out Thiago Alves in the main event, while other winners were Costa Philippou, James Te-Huna, Anthony Perosh, Steven Siler, Andrew Craig, TJ Waldburger, Daniel Pineda and Shawn Jordan.

UFC Live: Sanchez vs. Kampmann

Future UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman began his rise to fame on March 3, 2011 with a decision win over Alessio Sakara. The card also featured Diego Sanchez downing Martin Kampmann and Mark Munoz knocking out C.B. Dollaway.

Other winners were Brian Bowles, Cyrille Diabate, Danny Castillo, Shane Roller, Takeya Mizugaki, Dongi Yang, Rousimar Palhares and Igor Pokrajac.

UFC 96: Jackson vs. Jardine

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Rashad Evans kicked off a long-running feud on March 7, 2009 after Jackson defeated Keith Jardine. The two would eventually coach on The Ultimate Fighter and finally square off years later, with Evans earning the win.

Shane Carwin, Matt Brown, Matt Hamill and Gray Maynard all picked up main card wins, while Tamdan McCrory, Kendall Grove, Jason Brilz, Brandon Vera and Shane Nelson earned prelim victories.
