We are trying something new at FightLine, presenting a look back at the historical moments in UFC history during the present week.
So here’s a look at three events that took place between January 25-31 inside the Octagon:
UFC Fight Night: Evans vs. Salmon
Former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans earned main event billing and delivered on January 25, 2007, finishing Sean Salmon with a second round head kick.
The card also featured the UFC debut of Heath Herring, as he was defeated by Jake O’Brien.
Other winners were Hermes Franca, Nate Marquardt, Josh Burkman, Ed Herman, Din Thomas and Rich Clementi.
UFC on FOX: Johnson vs. Dodson
On January 26, 2013, Demetrious Johnson successfully defended his UFC flyweight title with a decision win over John Dodson in the main event from Chicago.
Glover Teixeira also picked up a decision vs. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, while future UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis stopped Donald Cerrone.
Other winners were Ricardo Lamas, T.J. Grant, Clay Guida, Pascal Krauss, Ryan Bader, Shawn Jordan, Rafael Natal and David Mitchell.
UFC 94: St-Pierre vs. Penn 2
The biggest event of this week happened on January 31, 2009, as Georges St-Pierre put his welterweight title on the line against BJ Penn, who was the reigning lightweight champion.
Taking place on Super Bowl weekend, it marked the first time two current UFC champions would square off.
St-Pierre dominated Penn, earning a TKO by way of doctor’s stoppage after the fourth round.
Two future champions – and eventual foes – would compete on the main card, as Lyoto Machida knocked out Thiago Silva and Jon Jones picked up a decision over Stephan Bonnar.
Other winners were Karo Parisyan, Clay Guida, Jon Fitch, Thiago Tavares, John Howard, Jake O’Brien and Dan Cramer.
