Want to know something pretty weird and interesting? The UFC has never held an event the week of February 8-14.
In doing some research for the latest edition of This Week in MMA, there was no previous UFC event to include. So, I had to dig deeper and look at the past in Strikeforce so Bellator MMA would not be the only note for the week.
The following are those two events:
Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Silva
Set from the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, this card drew record numbers for Strikeforce, as 741,000 viewers tuned in on average to see Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva finish Fedor Emelianenko.
“The Last Emperor” was hoping to get back on track after a loss to Fabricio Werdum snapped his lengthy win streak, but Silva rocked him for two rounds before the cageside doctors called a stop to the fight after the second.
Silva advanced in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix with his win, as did Sergei Kharitonov, who finished Andrei Arlovski in the opening round.
The late Shane Del Rosario, Chad Griggs and Valentin Overeem each earned wins to position themselves as replacements in the tournament. Overeem bested current World Series of Fighting president Ray Sefo.
Other winners were John Cholish, Igor Gracie, Sam Oropeza, Josh LaBerge and Jason McLean.
Eduardo Dantas knocked out Marcos Galvao on February 14, 2013 to retain his Bellator bantamweight title.
It was the first successful defense for Dantas, who had won the belt in 2012 over Zach Makovsky.
Dan Cramer, Brett Cooper, Doug Marshall and Sultan Aliev all advanced in middleweight tournament fights.
Other winners were David Mejia, Aaron Johnson, Joe Pacheco, Johnny Buck and Mike Maldonado.
