Vladimir Matyushenko Surprised UFC Released Him

Vladimir Matyushenko’s second UFC run ended like the first one, with a release. It caught Matyushenko off-guard, but he’s open to a potential third return.

“I thought they were going to give me one more chance to show myself because that quick submission was just a technical mistake,” said Matyushenko to MMA Sentinel. “I talked to Dana White right afterwards and we shook hands. We’re cool. I understand that the newcomers come in and they have to test them and move on.”

After taking several UFC wins, Matyushenko dropped a pair of first round stoppages.  The most recent ones were to Alexander Gustafsson and was followed by a 50 second guillotine choke defeat to Ryan Bader.

He makes his MMA return against Houston Alexander at Bellator 99.

Alexander is also a former UFC fighter who is 15-9. The UFC released him in late 2009.

They’re on the main card of Bellator 99, which comes from the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, CA.  It’s today, September 13, and the main card airs live on Spike TV.
