Vitor Belfort caught Chris Weidman in the opening moments of their fight Saturday night at UFC 187.
But that appeared to be just what the reigning UFC middleweight champion wanted, taking Belfort down and finishing him inside of three minutes.
“Chris is a great fighter,” Belfort said. “I knew he wanted the fight on the ground and I tried to avoid it. This was just a better night for him.”
After earning his title shot with three straight finishes, Belfort was forced to get TRT out of his system and compete without it. He connected with a flurry of heavy shots vs. Weidman, but he couldn’t get off his back.
“I should have kept the distance and punched, kicked him, but I let him take me down,” Belfort said. “I was doing great (before that).”
Belfort is a former UFC heavyweight champion and fought for the light heavyweight title vs. Jon Jones before returning to middleweight where he topped Michael Bisping, Luke Rockhold and Dan Henderson in succession.
