Belfort replaced Wanderlei Silva and was scheduled to meet Chael Sonnen at the July 5 card from Las Vegas. However, Sonnen failed a recent drug test and has been suspended.
Sonnen plans to appeal the decision, but the UFC could still move forward with Belfort fighting that night against another opponent.
The card currently features a double-title fight lineup, as Chris Weidman defends his middleweight belt against Lyoto Machida and Ronda Rousey faces Alexis Davis for the female bantamweight gold.
For what it’s worth, Belfort must still get his fight license from the Nevada Athletic Commission to compete after a failed drug test of his own earlier this year due to elevated levels of testosterone. The test results prompted the UFC to replace Belfort in the title fight with Weidman at the time.
