Life without good food is unimaginable, right? After a hard day’s work, anything, be it a scrumptious strawberry cake topped with chocolate chips, an adeptly tossed chicken waldorf salad or even a simple peanut butter-jelly sandwich can take one to the very doorsteps of heaven. “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well” said Virginia Woolf – There cannot be a better way to depict the importance of the role played by the life-givers that we call food. But the same can even end up working against our well-being. The trick is to eat what is right – a balanced diet to be more precise.
Every tiniest nutrient that our body needs for its functioning is available in the food we eat. Some can be manufactured by our body, but there are some essential nutrients which cannot be naturally manufactured that are needed for the proper our functioning of our body. Vitamins, for example are substances that are essential for our growth and development and are needed in tiny quantities. Since they cannot be naturally synthesized in adequate quantities, our body depends solely on our diet for its necessary vitamins.
Vitamins A, D, E and K are fat-soluble while B and C are water-soluble. Milk, eggs, carrots, meat, spinach, egg yolk, fish, green leafy vegetables and yogurt are rich sources of fat-soluble vitamins while cabbages, strawberries, citrus fruits, wheat, beans, seafood and whole grains are rich in water-soluble vitamins.
Are supplements necessary?
Though most of us who consume a balanced diet are assured of adequate quantities of vitamins, it may not be the case with everyone. Body builders, for example can benefit a lot from vitamin supplements. Vitamins play a crucial part in the growth and maintenance of muscle cells. Vitamins like A, B12, B1, B2, B3, B6, C and E are extremely important for body-builders for they assist in connective tissue development, muscle tissue support, muscle growth and so on.
Extracted from natural foods like cod-liver oil, yeast and soy beans, vitamin supplements need to be taken with proper consultation of a medical expert. They need to be taken during the day after a meal and never on an empty stomach. There are several online vitamin suppliers available that one can make use of, some of which even provide free samples to experiment. But remember: Always consult your physician before you decide on any routine.
Mind your intake
Though essential, vitamins if taken in large quantities can cause a lot of damages to the body. The amount of each vitamin that our body can withstand is limited. For example, overdose of vitamin B6 can cause motor and sensory control loss. Only 100-300 milligrams of vitamin E is necessary for the body per day and if an overdose occurs, there are chances for reproductive problems and blood clots.
Eat healthy, stay fit and most importantly, stay happy. Remember: It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver. – Mahatma Gandhi
