Urijah Faber Ties Anderson Silva With His UFC 181 Victory

By scoring a second round submission victory over Francisco Rivera Saturday night at UFC 181, Urijah Faber placed his name atop a list with Anderson Silva.

Faber’s second round choke earned him his 14th finish in the UFC and WEC, tying a mark that Silva had previously held. They own the record for most finishes in the two promotions, which were merged a few years ago.

While it went down as a win – keeping Faber’s record unbeaten in non-title fights – there was some controversy. “The California Kid” landed an eye poke that badly hurt Rivera, doubling the underdog over. Faber took advantage, as the referee didn’t notice the illegal shot, earning his 32nd career win.

“I feel bad for Francisco,” Faber said. “He fought a great fight. It was unfortunate and I would never wish that on anyone. We train our butts off.

“I’ve been there before…but I go out there and finish fights.”

Faber (32-7) has now won two straight since a loss to Renan Barao, and is 6-1 in his last seven overall. He’s earned 17 career submission victories.

Rivera (10-4) is on a two-fight losing skid, but is 5-2 with one no-contest in his last eight.
