“UFC Tonight” insider Ariel Helwani offered up some interesting soundbites concerning UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, Conor McGregor and Julianna Pena.
Jones, who will meet Daniel Cormier in January for the title, is reuniting with his former wrestling coach ahead of the contest. Cormier is an ex-Olympic wrestler.
“Before his fight against Glover (Teixeira), Jon Jones had falling out with long-time wrestling coach Israel Martinez, but didn’t really need him for Glover,” Helwani said. “But now he’s back for Daniel Cormier. They needed the best wrestling coach to prepare for this fight.”
McGregor, who is also set to fight in January vs. Dennis Siver, might be following the career path of Ronda Rousey.
“His manager told me that there are some movie deals in the works, but they’ll focus on those after his fight in January,” Helwani reported.
Pena has been sidelined since winning the Season 18 title of The Ultimate Fighter with a severe knee injury. She is targeting a return to action in early-2015.
“I talked to her coach, and he says she’s made an amazing recovery. If it were up to him, she could be back in January, but she’s expected to return in March,” Helwani said. “He says on a week’s notice, she can beat anyone in the division not named Ronda Rousey.”
