“UFC Tonight” brought with it several interesting notes, including possible next fights for middleweights Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and Lyoto Machida.
Souza, coming off a submission win over Gegard Mousasi, wants to remain in training in case something happens to either champion Chris Weidman or challenger Vitor Belfort before they meet in December.
“His plan is to be the UFC’s Plan B,” Ariel Helwani reported. “He’s going into a full training camp for the Weidman vs. Belfort fight. If something happens on one day’s notice, one week’s notice, he’ll be ready to fight for the title fight. There’s no other opponent out there who makes sense for him to fight right now.”
Machida, who lost to Weidman earlier this year, appears to be locked into a December meeting in Brazil with C.B. Dollaway. Both sides are “interested,” according to Helwani.
UFC 178 main event fighters get tested
Demetrious Johnson will defend his flyweight title later this month against Chris Cariaso at UFC 178 from Las Vegas. Both “Mighty Mouse” and Cariaso have been given surprise drug tests ahead of the bout, according to a report.
“I found out that both Demetrious Johnson and Chris Cariaso were both randomly tested a few weeks ago, Helwani said. “I was also told if a fighter is fighting at UFC 178 and hasn’t gotten his license yet, he is still subject to testing.”
The card will also feature the UFC debut of Eddie Alvarez, as he takes on Donald Cerrone.
Update on lightweight contender Khabib Nurmagomedov
After agreeing to face Cerrone, Khabib Nurmagomedov went down with a knee injury. The fighter only recently found out that the UFC would help him cover the cost of surgery, and the promotion moved quickly to get him top-notch help.
“He didn’t know that the UFC would help him with his medical bills. When Lorenzo Fertitta heard this, he flew him to (Los Angeles) to have the surgery with the same doctor as (Georges St-Pierre),” Helwani said. “Khabib is hoping to come back in February. He considers himself the number-one contender. He says he would like to fight for the title, but would also fight Cowboy Cerrone because of some of the things he’s said. And he considers Anthony Pettis to be easy money because he has no wrestling and no good defense.”
