On the heels of the announcement that Jon Jones has been suspended for a year, the UFC has stripped him of his interim light heavyweight title.
USADA suspended Jones until next July for a failed drug test, and UFC president Dana White told ESPN that he is no longer a champion. Jones, who was stripped of the title after a run-in with the law, won the interim belt vs. Ovince Saint Preux earlier this year.
“It doesn’t make sense,” White said. “He was the interim champion because he should have been fighting for the title (at UFC 197). We gave him this, ‘You were supposed to fight for the title, here it is.’ It doesn’t make sense with all the stuff that is going on for him to still be the interim champion.”
Jones was scheduled to meet Daniel Cormier at UFC 200 in July prior to the failed drug test.
