Yes, as some fans and pundits opined prior to Saturday’s card, Shevchenko proved to be a huge test and then some for the former bantamweight champ. Holm was in the fight the whole way through, but the renowned and proven striking skills of Shevchenko ultimately ruled the day, and she won via unanimous decision.
Well, since Shevchenko just defeated a former champ, and because she dropped a close decision to the new champ, Amanda Nunes in March, the striker is fielding questions about a rematch. Following her impressive win on Saturday, here is some of what Shevchenko had to say about Nunes (quotes via MMA Fighting.com):
“She’s definitely scared,” Shevchenko said about Nunes. “I’m ready for five rounds, for sure. I will take whoever I need to fight next. But I think she’s definitely scared.”
“I’m keeping my eyes on the bantamweight championship,” Shevchenko added . “These are my plans. I hope to get my revenge against Amanda Nunes. I’ll do my best to make sure this happens. I know perfectly well that I need to train hard. This I promise. I will always fight with all my heart in the Octagon.”
It will be interesting to see what happens next, in terms of the 135 title shot. Julianna Pena has won four straight and is coming off a win over Cat Zingano, so she could be booked to challenge Nunes in her first title defense. Unless, of course, Ronda Rousey decides to come back this year and asks for a crack at Nunes.
