If all goes as planned – which, in MMA, never seems to happen – the UFC will head into Melbourne, Australia with guns blazing.
According to a report by The Daily Telegraph, the promotion is working on a November event inside Etihad Stadium. The venue could seat over 50,000 fans, and the report states that Jon Jones, Ronda Rousey and Conor McGregor are all in play as the main event.
An official announcement is expected in the coming weeks. The Victorian Labor government recently voted to lift the ban surrounding the use of the Octagon, allowing the UFC to head to the area.
“We only get one chance to make a first impression,” UFC executive Tom Wright said. “I remember when we first went into Toronto, Canada and Lorenzo Fertitta said, ‘this is going to be our Super Bowl.’ It’s the same with Melbourne. That will be our mandate.
“It’s why this card has to be headlined with a world title fight. We cannot od an event of this magnitude without putting a belt on the line.”
