UFC On FOX 9: Sam Stout Vs. Cody McKenzie

Sam Stout vs. Cody McKenzie

We remain in the 155-pound division with Sam Stout taking on Cody McKenzie. Stout (19-9-1) has alternated wins and losses in his last six fights, including a submission defeat at the hands of James Krause in June.

McKenzie (14-3) topped Leonard Garcia earlier this year. After starting his career 12-0, he is 2-3 in his last five.

Round 1: McKenzie has no sponsor banner and nothing on his shorts, outside of maybe some hand-written area code numbers. Big takedown right off the bat by the TUF alum, who is working for his patented guillotine choke of some sorts. Pretty sure referee Herb Dean just ripped the tags off McKenzie’s fight shorts. Never seen that before. Yep, they are Nike-brand shorts with “907” written on the leg. Stout misses with a head kick attempt that McKenzie just laughs off. Stout lands with a kick to the body. McKenzie is getting hit hard, as he has a cut under his left eye. Stout’s striking is on point, and he’s doing the right thing by avoiding the ground game with McKenzie. Stout drops McKenzie, tells him to stand up and connects to the body again. All Stout to end this round.

Round 2: Stout continuing to work the body with lefts, rights and kicks, and now he’s catching every kick attempt by McKenzie and making him pay with shots to the body. Total domination so far for Stout, who is perfect with his attacks. Big kick lands to the face of McKenzie, appeared to be the shin of Stout that connected. Unless McKenzie can take this to the ground, he’s going to lose a decision. Stout with a big right off a faint and just misses with a left hook. All Stout, though he didn’t do a lot of damage.

Round 3: Have to expect McKenzie to go for it all here, as he has to know he’s down two rounds. Stout, though, catches him coming in. Can’t imagine at this point McKenzie has the power to drop Stout with one punch, and he’s been unable to string anything together. Just over three minutes left and Stout continues to keep him at bay from any submission attempts with jabs. Now, after fending off a takedown, Stout tries to roll McKenzie over with a choke. He’s got control of his head and neck, but can’t quite secure it. Stout takes the back, but realizes that’s McKenzie’s only chance to catch him and stands back up. Another nasty kick to the body by Stout. McKenzie throwing a bunch of spinning attacks, but the crowd begins to boo in disapproval of the lack of action. McKenzie deep on a single and Stout sits on top of him. McKenzie tries for a leglock, but is unable to get it.
