Joe Lauzon vs. Mac Danzig

“Mr. Fight-Night Bonus,” Joe Lauzon, steps into the Octagon to tackle Mac Danzig to kickoff the main card. Lauzon (22-9) has lost two in a row, but is a 12-time fight-night bonus winner, including five “Fight of the Nights.”.

Danzig (21-11-1) has won four bonuses himself, including three “Fight of the Nights.” He is also on a two-fight losing skid and is 2-4 in his last six.

Round 1: Danzig has no logos on his shorts and just the words “Not For Sale” on the back. Lauzon with a takedown early in the action, working to control Danzig and comes hammering down with big shots. Danzig, though, rolls, but gets stuck in an armbar. Lauzon working hard for it, but Danzig gets out with a smooth step over. Danzig grinding on Lauzon against the fence, and “J-Lau” storms back with a takedown, sending him across the cage and to the canvas.

Round 2: Danzig comes out strong, firing off leg kicks and clinching with Lauzon, who tries a hip toss but gets denied. Something you don’t hear very often is happening, as the crowd is booing and restless during a Lauzon fight. Danzig catches him with a left, as Lauzon appears to be hesitant to engage. Lauzon with a nice trip takedown, as Danzig pulls guard and we go under two minutes. Danzig is busted open and his vision could be impaired with blood now after some vicious elbows by Lauzon from the top. Danzig looks like he is wearing a cover around his eyes due to the blood and Lauzon goes for an armbar as we go under 10 seconds.

Round 3: Danzig gave Lauzon’s a compliment before the round started and will likely need a finish to pull out the win. Lauzon with a shot and scores on the takedown, making him a perfect 3-for-3 with three minutes to work on securing the finish. Working on a submission or finish by punches, as Lauzon ties up his arms and is bloodying the face with elbows. Back to the mount as we go under two minutes and more elbows. The ref is getting close to the action, signalling a decision to stop it. Lauzon moves to a potential armbar with 90 seconds left, battering Danzig, but he’s unable to secure it. Danzig folds him up and is on top with a minute to go. Lauzon reverses and winds up back on top of Danzig as the round – and fight – comes to a close.
