UFC On FOX 9: Darren Uyenoyama Vs. Alp Ozkilic

Darren Uyenoyama vs. Alp Ozkilic

We begin things where we will end them, as flyweights Darren Uyenoyama and Alp Ozkilic square off. Uyenoyama (8-4) had his three-fight win streak snapped by title-contender Joseph Benavidez earlier this year, while Ozkilic (8-1) is making his Octagon debut after three straight regional circuit wins.

Round 1: Ozkilic catches Uyenoyama with a big left-hook early and sprawls off a takedown attempt. Uyenoyama continues and gets it, scoring off a single-leg. Ozkilic working for a potential choke, but gives it up to work to his feet. Uyenoyama continues to press and is working an armbar off his back before getting to his feet. Big knee inside the clinch by Uyenoyama and he takes him back to the canvas. Uyenoyama lands a high kick after they get back to the feet and shoots for another takedown, which is denied. Ozkilic fends off another takedown attempt and lands his own trip takedown, but Uyenoyama is now on his back – which is where he likes to be. We head under a minute in the round, as Ozkilic is landing some nice ground-and-pound, while Uyenoyama continues to look for a ligament to secure.

Round 2: Uyenoyama rolls to try and grab a leg but is denied. He shoots for another single-leg and gets hold of it, but Ozkilic winds up on top after they roll. Big right hand lands from Uyenoyama, who follows up with a kick to the body. Uyenoyama pulls guard off a failed takedown attempt. The pace has slowed a bit by both, especially Uyenoyama. Ozkilic might just be conserving energy, waiting for his opportunity to strike. Uyenoyama pulls guard once again and eats some lefts for his decision.

Round 3: Ozkilic is the fresher fighter, landing some big strikes that are hurting Uyenoyama now. Uyenoyama tries to tie him up in the clinch, but Ozkilic scores with another trip takedown, as Uyenoyama is forced to give up a potential armbar because of his tiredness. Ozkilic needs to watch out, as Uyenoyama has him tied up in the rubber guard but he’s unable to do anything. Out of nowhere Uyenoyama throws a flying wheel kick, but misses. Ozkilic nearly takes him off his feet with a right, as he goes flying back. Another right lands and Ozkilic wants him back to his feet. A third right connects with over two minutes left in the round. Ozkilic in complete control, though he is eating some elbows from the ground. Uyenoyama trying for another armbar, but he just doesn’t have the energy to secure anything.
