UFC On FOX 9: Chad Mendes Vs. Nik Lentz

Chad Mendes vs. Nik Lentz

We enter the featherweight division, and get another member of Team Alpha Male, as Chad Mendes squares off with Nik Lentz. Mendes (15-1) has won four straight since a loss to UFC champion Jose Aldo, and is viewed by many as the next contender should he win tonight.

Lentz (24-5-2) has picked up three straight wins since moving down from lightweight, including a pair of decisions this year over Hacran Dias and Diego Nunes.

Round 1: Here we go with the action, as Mendes fires off a huge shot and nearly finishes Lentz in the early moments. Mendes continuing to attack, forcing Lentz to back up. Lentz answers with a kick that seems to halt the momentum for at least the time being. Blood pouring out of the nose of Lentz now and he comes in wild with an uppercut. Mendes with a perfectly-timed takedown that scores. Lentz has plenty of swelling on his face from the damage inflicted by “Money.” Another takedown for Mendes with ease, as Lentz has no answer for his wrestling. One final takedown to end it for Mendes.

Round 2: Mendes seemed exhausted after that opening round, which typically doesn’t happen with him. Mendes lands a fourth takedown. but is not attempting to do much on the ground. Joe Rogan believes something could be wrong, as this doesn’t seem like the same old finishing Chad Mendes. Maybe he’s just concerned with making a mistake. Lentz lifts him on his legs and throws Mendes off him and into the fence, getting back to his feet. Big shot catches Lentz. Another takedown by Mendes as the round comes to an end.

Round 3: Lentz drops Mendes with a right. He asked during the break if he was up 2-0 and his coaches told him yes. Something definitely seems off with Mendes. Mendes stuffed for the second time on a takedown attempt and eats a kick to the body. Lentz pushing the pace and coming after Mendes. Lentz really giving Mendes troubles with his striking, and just like that, Mendes fires off a huge flying knee that lands and goes for a guillotine choke. He mounts with it as we go under a minute, but Lentz gets free.
