While the original main card for UFC on FOX 16 was one for the ages, we are still left with a pretty rock-solid lineup.
And it all leads to a title rematch, as T.J. Dillashaw defends his bantamweight belt against Renan Barao Saturday night from the United Center in Chicago.
Back at UFC 173, Dillashaw shocked the MMA world, finishing Barao in the fifth round of a contest he was dominating. The win marked the first UFC championship for Team Alpha Male, and ended the lengthy win streak for the Brazilian.
UFC officials granted Barao an immediate rematch, but a rough weight cut forced them to remove the former champion and insert Joe Soto into the main event of UFC 177.
Dillashaw remained in the headline bout that night, storming through former Bellator champion Joe Soto and earning his first title defense.
A few months later, officials again locked up Dillashaw and Barao, as they were announced for UFC 186. This time, it was the champion bowing out, as a broken rib suffered in training did him in.
Since that initial meeting, the two sides have come to verbal blows on many occasions, only furthering the feud between Team Alpha Male and Nova Uniao.
Finally, this weekend, we will get to see Dillashaw vs. Barao 2. Can the former Ultimate Fighter duplicate his incredible performance? Or will Barao prove it was nothing more than an off-night for him and reclaim the title?
Also, it’s hard to talk about UFC on FOX 16 and not mention the co-main event, as Miesha Tate and Jessica Eye have the chance to steal the show. The ladies of the bantamweight division have been working hard to secure a shot at Ronda Rousey, and the winner of this one moves to the front of the line – assuming Rousey takes care of Bethe Correia here in a few weeks.
