UFC On FOX 13 Recap: Junior Dos Santos-Stipe Miocic Engage In Bloody War

The UFC completed a two-day doubleheader Saturday night with UFC on FOX 13 from Phoenix.

In the main event, former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos and Stipe Miocic engaged in a slugfest, with dos Santos coming out on top via unanimous decision. Both men left the Octagon a bloody mess after 25 minutes of back-and-forth action that was dominated by the stand-up game.

Miocic started extremely fast, landing with his strikes early and often despite being stopped on several takedown attempts. “Cigano” returned fire after a slow start, finding his range and landing a number of power shots.

While he is still likely another win or two away from contending for the UFC lightweight title, Rafael dos Anjos did nothing to hurt his current standing. The Brazilian dominated Nate Diaz, earning an easy decision by battering the leg and punishing the one-time title-contender.

Alistair Overeem and Matt Mitrione made quick work of Stefan Struve and Gabriel Gonzaga, earning first round TKO victories. For Overeem, the win got him back on track after a loss to Ben Rothwell earlier this year.

Mitrione caught Gonzaga early, finishing the bout in under two minutes.

Struve was fighting for the first time since being diagnosed with an enlarged heart and aortic valve problem.

The prelims featured Joanna Jdrzejczyk likely cementing her status as No. 1 contender to the UFC strawweight title with a decision victory over Claudia Gadelha. She could be set up for a meeting in 2015 with Carla Esparza, who won the title over Rose Namajunas on Friday.

John Moraga, Ben Saunders, Drew Dober and Ian Entwistle all scored submission victories on the prelims, while Bryan Barberena earned a TKO victory. David Michaud and former U.S. Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo picked up decisions.

Dos Santos and Miocic were awarded the “Fight of the Night,” while Mitrione and Entwistle earned “Performance of the Night” honors. All four scored an additional $50,000. The attendance inside U.S. Airways Center in Phoenix was announced at 15,300 for a live gate of $1.5 million.
