Jorge Masvidal vs. Daron Cruickshank

We’ve reached the prelim main event, as lightweights Jorge Masvidal (26-8) and Daron Cruickshank (15-4) go to battle inside the Octagon.

Round 1: Many, including UFC president Dana White, believe this scrap could steal “Fight of the Night” this evening. We will see. Masvidal takes the center and has Cruickshank pedaling on his bike around the outside. Sweeping leg kick by Masvidal, and out of nowhere, Cruickshank delivers and drops him. It looked like a knockout, but Masvidal jumped right back up. Great job of reffing by Herb Dean to allow this one to continue. Masvidal is now backing him down, but that is also where he got caught earlier. Big knee to the body after Masvidal catches a kick, landing a few more shots. Front-kick connects and this one is living up to the hype so far.

Round 2: Despite scoring with the early knockdown, Cruickshank’s face has plenty of damage, including a cut over his eye. Masvidal fires off a couple of kicks and gets taken down for his effort. Right back to his feet and he uses a guillotine choke attempt to score with a takedown of his own and wind up on top. Excellent transition. Masvidal peppering the body with strikes, including quick elbows. Masvidal locks up a choke and he appears to have it in tight, but Cruickshank is fighitng for survival and does. Great defense by Cruickshank, but Masvidal remains in control and has done plenty of damage.

Round 3: More of the same through the early stages, as Masvidal controls the action. He’s in deep on a takedown attempt of his own, ramming the legs with hard knees and Cruickshank rolls right into a D’arce choke. Masvidal spins to the back and avoids a switch attempt by Cruickshank, who does get to his feet. Masvidal wearing on him as we head to the two-minute mark, and Cruickshank fires off and nearly scores a kimura. He’s found another burst of energy and is coming after Masvidal, who is retreating. Cruickshank, though, gets a little too high off a takedown and winds up on his back.
