UFC FN 80: Prelims Play-By-Play And Results

So, the first of three UFC cards this week is under way, as UFC Fight Night 80 is going down at the Chelsea at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas. In the headliner, Rose Namajunas will take on fellow strawweight contender, Paige VanZant.

Let’s get to the preliminary card shall we?

Kailin Curran def. Emily Kagan via submission (rear-naked-choke) R2, 4:13

Zubaira Tukhugov def. Phillipe Nover via split decision (30-27, 28-29, 30-27)

Nathan Coy vs. Danny Roberts

Round 1: Two  southpaws going at it here. Both men wing hard lefts. Coy sticks a short right. Big left from Roberts. Welterweights aren’t hold back when they step into the pocket. Roberts fires a kick to the body but Coy takes it, scores TD. Roberts is looking for a triangle. Wow. Roberts transitions into an armbar and fight’s over. Impressive debut for Roberts.

Interesting, bout is declared a technical submission via triangle-choke. Coy must have been out.

Santiago Ponzinibbio vs. Andreas Stahl

Round 1: Stahl lands a leg kick. Stahl follows up with a takedown but Ponzinibbio pops back up. Wow. Ponzinibbio plants a hard leg kick and some cracking punches. Stahl counters with a TD but Ponzinibbio is up again. Stahl is already cut under his right eye. Ponzinibbio is sticking a nasty jab. Stahl continues to eat punches. Latter’s nose appears to be bleeding as well. Yikes. Huge right hand from Ponzinibbio puts Stahl on the mat. That’s a wrap.

Johnny Eduardo vs. Aljamain Sterling

Round 1: Sterling spins with a kick but misses. Eduardo counters with a hard leg kick. Sterling with more kicks but they’re missing. Eduardo catches a kick from Sterling but can’t get the TD. Another hard leg kick from Eduardo. Sterling with a leg kick. Sterling shoots a double leg and gets it. Sterling is trying to pass out of half guard. Elbow from Sterling. Left hands from Sterling. Eduardo gets to his feet but round ends.

Round 2: Sterling fires a leg kick and Eduardo misses with a counter. Another inside leg kick from Eduardo. Sterling misses with a spinning backfist. Not much volume from either bantamweight. Eduardo comes with a hard headkick but Sterling blocks it. Action picks up. Both guys wing hard shots–call the other on. Sterling scores a TD. Elbows from the latter. Ouch. And some more. Eduardo is trying to get to his feet, but Sterling slaps on a guillotine choke from above. Eduardo taps. Another impressive win for Sterling.

Kevin Casey vs. Antonio Carlos Junior

Round 1: Wow. Casey takes a shot seconds in, and the ref stops the action due to an eye poke. Yup. Replay shows it was a nasty one. Casey is heard saying he can’t see out of his right eye at all. Fight’s over.

Omari Akhmedov vs. Sergio Moraes

Round 1: Hard leg kick from Akhmedov but Moraes checks it. Akhmedov fires a spinning backfist. Moraes comes with a flying knee that misses. Akhmedov looks content to counter. Akhmedov chucks an uppercut but eats a counter left. Moraes gets tagged with a right hand. Akhmedov fires in a hard body kick. Wow. Moraes is pounded with a huge right hand and hits the deck. He appears to be okay, is firing kicks from his back as Akhmedov stands above. Ref stands them up. Moraes shoots in but Akhmedov defends. Moraes is cut by his right eye. Round ends.

Round 2: Akhmedov blasts Moraes to the body with a kick. Moraes wings in a huge overhand right. Akhmedov with a nice left hook counter. Action has slowed. Commentators Jon Anik and Brian Stann have noticed Moraes could be favoring his right hand. Both guys chuck big punches. Akhmedov with a nicely timed TD. Moraes is countering with a guillotine attempt. Round ends.

Round 3: Both men stick jabs. Akhmedov calls Moraes on. Nice left from Moraes. Now Moraes shoots in but Akhmedov easily defends. Moraes comes with a big overhand but misses. Crazy. Moraes rocks Akhmedov with a huge right straight. A dazed Akhmedov goes to the deck and the ref jumps in. Big finish for Moraes.

Sergio Moraes def. Omari Akhmedov via TKO (punches) R3, 2:18

John Howard vs. Tim Means

Round 1: Means throws a front kick and blasts Howard with a huge left. Howard looks hurt but counters with a TD attempt. Means gets warned for grabbing the fence. Means works out of the clinch. Both guys fire big shots. Means is peppering Howard from the outside. Howard flurries in with hooks. Would be very surprised if this goes the distance. Howard digs to the body with a hook. Howard blasts in and gets the TD. Means nicely gets back to his feet. Another TD from Howard but Means pops right back up. Knee to the body from Means. Hard hook from Means to the body of Howard. Means chucks a headkick but Howard blocks, pushes him to the fence. Round ends.

Round 2: Means fires in a hard hook to the body of Howard. Yikes. Howard eats a massive left hook from Means and hits the floor. Another hammer fist from Means follows but Howard is already out. What a knockout.
