While they didn’t match the number of finishes at UFC Fight Night 55, there were still plenty of interesting outcomes Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 56 from Brazil.
Ovince St. Preux made the biggest impact over the two cards, stunning the Brazilian crowd and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in the main event with a finish in just seconds.
St. Preux, a former Tennessee Volunteer college football standout, caught Rua with a left hook that dropped the ex-UFC light heavyweight champion. OSP quickly pounced on the opening, blasting Rua with several shots until the referee stepped in.
The crowd, which waited until almost 4 a.m. local time to see one of their heroes in action, was left in stunned silence as St. Preux celebrated inside the Octagon.
The co-main event saw Warlley Alves, a recent winner of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil, earn a decision victory over Alan Jouban. After Ian McCall came down with an infection and was not allowed to fight John Lineker, Alves and Jouban stepped into the co-main event role.
Claudio Silva and Dhiego Lima, who were both scheduled to fight on the prelims, were also bumped to the main card and each earned decision wins. Juliana Lima started off the FOX Sports 1 broadcast with a decision victory, as well.
Caio Magalhaes, Leandro Silva and Colby Covington all scored finishes on the prelims. Covington overcame a foot injury in the first to lock up a rear-naked choke on Wagner Silva, while Leandro Silva choked out Charlie Brenneman and Magalhaes stopped Trevor Smith 31 seconds into the fight.
St. Preux, Leandro Silva, Thomas Almeida and Tim Gorman all earned $50,000 in bonus checks. St. Preux and Silva were “Performance of the Night” winners, while Almeida and Gorman won “Fight of the Night.” The attendance was announced at 5,671.
