One punch gave Anthony Pettis fits all night at UFC 185.
Pettis caught a shot from Rafael dos Anjos early in the main event that caused his right eye to swell, and the challenger dominated from there on out, claiming the UFC lightweight title Saturday night.
“He caught me with a left hand, the first punch, and I couldn’t see out of my right eye,” Pettis said. “No excuses. He’s a monster.”
Pettis (18-3) lost for the first time since his 2011 Octagon debut vs. Clay Guida. He had topped Jeremy Stephens, Joe Lauzon, Donald Cerrone, Benson Henderson and Gilbert Melendez before falling victim to the Brazilian.
“I’ll go back and train,” he said. “No excuses.”
After becoming the first person to submit Melendez last December, Pettis was expected to roll through dos Anjos and into a meeting with either Cerrone or Khabib Nurmagomedov later this year.
