We’ll kick off the new year with a bang Saturday night, as UFC 182: Jones vs. Cormier goes down.
After months of talk, Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier will finally settle the score inside the Octagon – with the light heavyweight title on the line.
While Jones-Cormier has taken up much of the headlines, it isn’t the only interesting fight set for the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Here’s a look at three things to watch for when the bell sounds and the action starts. And, as a reminder, FightLine will have complete coverage of all the action, including live play-by-play.
Is the reach of Jon Jones too much for Daniel Cormier?
While I promised things other than Jones-Cormier, it is just too hard to pass over discussing this.
“Bones” sports an incredible 84.5-inch reach, which is 12 inches more than that of the challenger. Add in Jones’ incredible takedown defense rate, and it is easy to see why “DC” might be in for a long night.
Cormier, though, has proven in the past that size doesn’t always matter. He toppled Antonio Silva, Josh Barnett, Frank Mir and Roy Nelson before moving down from heavyweight, where he has since added wins over Patrick Cummins and Dan Henderson.
It will be interesting to see which Jones shows up. The champion admitted in the past that he has taken fights and challengers lightly, but with all the trash talk between them, it’s hard to see him doing that with Cormier.
