UFC 181 Primer: Robbie Lawler Ends Matt Brown’s Win Streak

After going five rounds with Johny Hendricks, Robbie Lawler was placed in a No. 1 contender match with Matt Brown earlier this year.

Lawler earned the victory, moving on to next Saturday’s rematch with Hendricks for the welterweight title at UFC 181.

Robbie Lawler vs. Matt Brown

It’s time for the main event, and a No. 1 contender match in the welterweight division, as Robbie Lawler (23-10) squares off with Matt Brown (19-11).

Round 1: Lawler with a combo right off the bat, following that up with an overhand right. He is backing Brown up, who fires back with a high kick. Power left and a straight right land by Lawler, who is hitting everything he throws at Brown and is tagging him at will. Brown with a left that rocks Lawler for a brief moment. Here comes Lawler back and they mix it up once more. Combination by Brown and he hits him with a right, followed by a trip takedown as we go under three minutes. Brown working a potential choke, as he has him tied up and could secure a D’arce from where he’s at on the ground. Lawler notices and stands up to his feet, breaking the hold. Brown, inside the clinch, fires off a pair of elbows that connect. He’s got a cut on his forehead and it’s opening up more and more as Lawler hits him. Right followed by a knee followed by a right from Lawler. He looks to have hurt Brown with under a minute to go. Side kick to the body lands and Brown misses on a spinning attempt.

Round 2: Brown going to work, jabbing and using quick kicks to his advantage. Lawler counters by landing a right, and blocks a head kick. But Brown follows up with a kick to the body that connects. Brown shoots off a right and scores. Lawler right back to his feet, but Brown takes the back. He’s able to spin free and they separate, but Lawler now has a cut on his forehead. Straight left by Lawler and Brown appears a step slow. Just like that, “The Immortal” returns with a spinning kick followed by several more kicks and strikes. Brown catches him in the clinch and lands an elbow.

Round 3: Lawler throwing with a little more force here now, including power kicks to the body. Another to the body, this time a little higher. Instead of using a lot of energy, Lawler is being more technical, striking when he has openings and using his power on each shot. Kick by Lawler is ruled a low-blow, but it was a body shot. Brown acted hurt and reached low, getting the break. It almost looked like Donald Cerrone-Jim Miller from a few weeks ago. Lawler senses it, though, going right back to the body with another kick. Brown fires back with a kick to the body of his own.

Round 4: Lawler storms right out and drops Brown. He senses it and is in guard just seconds into the round. Lawler working to better his position to work some ground-and-pound. He gets an elbow through the great defense, resulting in falling into half-guard. Brown controlling with a guillotine started, but he’s unable to do anything with it for the moment. Brown uses an arm to get to his feet, throwing a back-kick on the way up. Another cut has formed on the face of Brown, who eats an uppercut. Single-leg takedown defended by Lawler, who has stuffed 4 of 6 attempts. Right-hook by Lawler lands and he just misses on a head-kick.

Round 5: Both corners told the fighters to go for it and they are doing just that, as the crowd greets them with thunderous applause. Short elbows from Brown and he backs Lawler up. Lawler comes back with an overhand right, and more elbows by The Immortal. Perfect kick to the body followed by a right from Ruthless. Brown working the body with kicks and punches as we go under three minutes in the fight. Brown walks right through a head kick. Brown comes alive, landing lefts and rights. After doing so, he shakes out his right hand, as he might have broke it. Brown’s only throwing his left now with two minutes to go in the round. Lawler to the body and a left jab snaps Brown’s head back. Exchange of jabs from both and a tight elbow by Brown. Another elbow and another after a straight left out of Brown. This is the fight everyone expected from these two to close out things. Each miss on spinning attacks. Brown isn’t defending anything, but Lawler seems reluctant to mix it up, knowing he is well ahead. Lawler drops him and pounces, but Brown’s able to get out and free. They embrace after.
