Former UFC middleweight contender Patrick Cote met Stephen Thompson on the televised portion of the UFC 178: Johnson vs Cariaso pay-per-view card, resulting in a back-and-forth battle that saw Cote doing much better than the oddsmakers assumed he would.
Cote came forward and didn’t let Thompson time his movement and land the big shot to put him down. The grinding game plan of Cote’s left the karate stylist off set with his stance and uncomfortable as opposed to being far on the outside to utilize his masterful distance striking.
Thompson didn’t let up, though, and kept trucking toward Cote with his tricky kicks and punches from long range. But Cote kept the same strategy in mind, moving forward when he chose to and not letting Thompson dictate the pace the entire time. Thompson began to find his groove in the second round and took over from there, winning both rounds and tallying up a much needed victory over an experienced veteran in Cote.
The Canadian looked good, but it wasn’t enough to take home the win tonight.
