Jason Saggo vs. Josh Shockley
We open up the night in the lightweight division, as Jason Saggo (9-1) goes up against Josh Shockley (11-2) in a battle of UFC newcomers.
Saggo owns eight career submission victories, including each of his last three via rear-naked choke. Shockley is on a two-fight win streak and is 5-1 in his last six, including a decision over Shamar Bailey.
Round 1: Saggo peppering him with kicks right off the bat, connecting with a nice shot to the body. Front kick from Shockley, who fights off a takedown attempt with elbows. Saggo transitions and scores the takedown, moving quickly into side control and finally into half-guard. Shockley uses the butterfly guard to pop him off, but they wind back up inside the guard. Shockley attacking off the bottom and almost secures an armbar. Saggo takes the back and winds up in side control yet again. Mount now for Saggo, but Shockley using his long legs to get the butterfly guard up and use it to his advantage. Shockley now kneeing Saggo to the body as he takes the clinch position and lands another solid knee to the midsection. Foot stomp from Shockley, but he gets out of position and taken down by Saggo. Shockley gives up his back with 40 seconds left. Back to the mount, transition quickly to the back and he locks up a rear-naked choke. He releases that and is teeing off with vicious ground-and-pound. The ref warns him there is just 10 seconds left and to fight back, but Shockley cannot and this one is all over.
