UFC 174: Demetrious Johnson Vs. Ali Bagautinov

It’s time for the main event, as UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson defends his title against Ali Bagutinov.

Johnson (19-2-1) has fended off the challenges of Joseph Benavidez, John Moraga and John Dodson since winning the belt in 2012. His two latest wins have both been finishes, and “Mighty Mouse” is unbeaten in his last six overall, going 5-0 with one no-contest.

Bagautinov (13-2) is a perfect 3-0 inside the Octagon, including back-to-back wins over John Lineker and Tim Elliott. He is on a 11-fight unbeaten streak, dating back to a 2011 decision loss.

Round 1: Bagautinov baiting Johnson in, standing flat-footed in the center of the Octagon. Good kick to the body from the challenger, who is now getting backed up against the fence. They tie up, exchange knees, Bagautinov grabs hold of one leg, lets go and gets caught in a Muay Thai clinch. Great takedown defense from the champion, but he eats a right and a knee to the body. Johnson reverses and lands a series of stiff knees to the body. Bagautinov finishes the round with a takedown, but Johnson springs right back up.

Round 2: Back to the clinch, and Johnson gets the better of it again. Cut on the bridge of Bagautinov’s nose, and DJ shows his kicking ability with a high kick. Johnson with a hard right and he’s backing up. Bagautinov ties him up and lands a good knee to the body. Johnson defending against the takedown, also working his own offense with elbows to the head while defending.

Round 3: Just in terms of “pep in the step,” Johnson hasn’t even moved his needle off full yet. Inside leg kicks from the champion are connecting. Big right-hand counter connects and back to working the inside leg kicks. Bagautinov doesn’t appear to have an answer for anything DJ is doing. Bagautinov gets a takedown, but just like in the first, can’t keep him down and do any damage. Johnson gains the clinch and unloads with heavy knees. Two huge knees from Johnson.

Round 4: A little more bounce to Bagautinov’s step to start this round, but nowhere near that of Johnson. Bagautinov flails with a wild shot and eats a counter for his efforts. Off a takedown attempt, DJ lands a knee to the head as we head past the midway point in the round. Johnson connects with a knee to the face. Bagautinov’s got him against the fence in his corner, but can’t do anything with the advantage, eating several knees.

Round 5: Bagautinov shoots for a takedown but is denied. Johnson with a huge knee inside the clinch and fires off several more shots. Another knee that gets caught this time, but he’s unable to complete the takedown. Bagautinov with a scream, as he appeared to get his knee caught. He’s stuck in the clinch and is eating several knees to the body.
