UFC 173 Primer: Robbie Lawler Takes Out Josh Koscheck

ufc 173

Back at UFC 157, Robbie Lawler made a triumphant return to the Octagon when he defeated Josh Koscheck via TKO in the first round.

Lawler, who would go on to score wins over Bobby Voelker and Rory MacDonald to earn a shot at the UFC title earlier this year, returns to action Saturday when he faces Jake Ellenberger at UFC 173 from Las Vegas.

Josh Koscheck vs. Robbie Lawler

We kick-start the pay-per-view main card in the welterweight division, as former No. 1 contender Josh Koscheck (17-6) returns from a 10-month layoff to face Robbie Lawler (19-9). Lawler is fighting in the UFC again for the first time since 2004. The referee will be Herb Dean.

Round 1: Lawler with a smirk, and Koscheck comes out right after him. Lawler backs Koscheck up against the fence, but “Kos” scores with a quick takedown. Lawler sweeps and gets to his feet, though Koscheck retains control and shifts to working a leg for another takedown. Some blood pouring from the nose of Kos, who gets the takedown. So far, this match has been just like the previous one between Lavar Johnson and Brendan Schaub. Lawler catches him with a sharp knee, and sprawls out of the takedown. Lawler catches Kos, pounces and finishes this one off quickly. Koscheck appears to be upset about the stoppage, as it did some fast but he was not defending himself at all as Lawler unloaded with several lefts and rights.
