Takanori Gomi vs. Isaac Vallie-Flagg

Let’s return to the lightweight division, as Takanori Gomi takes on Isaac Vallie-Flagg.

Gomi (34-9) is a former PRIDE champion who lost a split decision to Diego Sanchez in March. Prior to that, he had won two straight. He sports a 3-4 UFC record.

Vallie-Flagg (14-4-1) had his five-fight win streak – and 12-fight unbeaten streak – halted by Elias Silverio this past January via decision.

Round 1: Gomi with a nice counter, catching Vallie-Flagg coming in a little too hot. Gomi goes for a throw, but just tosses him against the fence. Vallie-Flagg slips, and it appears we have another fighter with issues concerning the canvas. Nice uppercut from Vallie-Flagg connects and Gomi goes to the body. Vallie-Flagg denies a takedown and hurts him with shots, as Gomi goes up against the fence. He just misses, but Gomi looks a little off after the onslaught. Off balance and Vallie-Flagg goes to his back. Gomi steps over into half-guard and eats an elbow. Gomi takes the back, locks in a hook and has over a minute to go. He tries to flatten him out, but is eating a series of punches. Vallie-Flagg slips free and now is applying the pressure. Gomi slips a right through and connects.

Round 2: Quick break in the action after some tape came loose on Gomi’s wrist. Joe Rogan is saying he doesn’t think Gomi is in shape, breathing heavily, but he lands a huge shot. Vallie-Flagg smiles and gives him the thumbs-up, stepping back with a right jab. Counter from Gomi lands, as does another and a third straight. Gomi combining his strikes with quick leg kicks. Gomi with a liver shot that hurts Vallie-Flagg, as he is leaning up against the fence, trying to recover. Gomi attacks, but it appears as if Vallie-Flagg has gotten his wits back. Gomi seems to have his distance, as he has injured the right eye area with a barrage of strikes. Immediate swelling and his eye might be closed shut.

Round 3: Vallie-Flagg drops him and is in a perfect position to attack, peppering Gomi with lefts and rights. Gomi gets to his feet, though, and has him tied up against the fence. Loud chant of “Gomi” breaks out among the crowd. That right eye is nearly completely swollen for Vallie-Flagg, but he’s continuing to push forward. He’s got Gomi up against the fence as we head under two minutes to go. Gomi reverses, breaks and lands a stiff jab. He’s bouncing around, landing lefts and rights as the blood is pouring from Vallie-Flagg. Huge cut opened up on his nose it looks like and Gomi is peppering him. He stopped for a brief moment to look at the corner and almost ask them to look at Vallie-Flagg’s cut. But we continue with a minute left. Vallie-Flagg gets the takedown despite another fence grab by Gomi, but he’s unable to secure anything and gets reversed.
