Phil Davis vs. Anthony Johnson

Our first of two light heavyweight bouts is next, and it’s the co-main event, as Phil Davis welcomes Anthony Johnson back to the Octagon.

Davis (12-1) is coming off a victory over Lyoto Machida in Brazil and has won three straight. He also downed both Vinny Magalhaes and Wagner Prado since a no-contest vs. Prado and a 2012 loss to Rashad Evans.

Johnson (16-4) has won each of his last six fights since a loss to Vitor Belfort. He was released by the UFC following the defeat, and competed in several weight classes and for numerous promotions. Of his six wins, four were knockouts.

Round 1: Little feeling out process here to start, as Davis throws a kick. Fakes a takedown attempt and backs off it. Davis eats an uppercut, and another while trying for a takedown. Johnson showing good defense, but Davis lands his own shot and adds a kick to the leg. Davis on the outside, circling away from the right of Johnson. Johnson has Davis hurt and is goes for the takedown. Johnson pounces and Davis is busted open, bleeding everywhere. Calm and cool “Rumble” is stalking him. Another takedown defended by Johnson. Despite having Davis hurt, Johnson isn’t going crazy to try and finish him. Another jab from Johnson.

Round 2: Exchange of inside leg kicks. Johnson has the timing down, countering everything Davis throws. Head kick from Johnson after catching a Davis kick. Denied again on a takedown attempt is the former NCAA champion. To the chin, Johnson catches him dipping down. Two lefts and a right from Rumble connect. He is all over Davis with two minutes to go in this round. Davis throwing kicks with success, but Johnson steps in with a right that hurts him. Davis is 0-for-5 on takedown attempts through 10 minutes.

Round 3: Johnson goes to the body, landing with ease. Davis’ corner told him he needs a finish between rounds, but offered no solutions to do that. Straight left from Johnson connects, as does a right hook. Another takedown defended. Just a flawless performance by Rumble. Nice right from Davis and he goes for a takedown. They battle in the clinch and no takedown. Also, no submission attempt on a drop-down by Davis. Johnson hurts him on another takedown attempt and Davis goes running in the other direction.
