A pair of featherweights looking to make a splash will square off at UFC 171, as Daniel Pineda takes on Robert Whiteford.
Officials announced the bout recently for the March 15 card from Dallas and the American Airlines Center.
In the night’s main event, Johny Hendricks and Robbie Lawler collide for the vacant UFC welterweight title. So far, 13 fights have been announced, but no bout order has been revealed.
Pineda (18-10) has split his six UFC matches, while Whiteford (10-2) dropped his debut to Jimy Hettes.
During his current UFC run, “The Pit” has defeated Mackens Semerzier and Pat Schilling, but is now just 1-3 in his last four – the latest of which was a loss to Diego Brandao in August.
The 28-year-old Pineda will likely receive a strong ovation from the crowd, as he was born in Dallas and currently trains and resides in nearby Houston. He owns 12 submission wins and six knockout victories, but has been submitted six times in his career.
Whiteford, a native of Scotland, has five knockout wins in his career. The 30-year-old trains with American Top Team and had a 10-fight win streak snapped by Hettes in October via technical submission.
Other matches that night include Carlos Condit-Tyron Woodley, Myles Jury-Diego Sanchez and Hector Lombard-Jake Shields.
