Robert Whittaker vs. Stephen Thompson
The first of three welterweight bouts kicks off our main card action, as former Ultimate Fighter winner Robert Whittaker meets Stephen Thompson.
Whittaker (11-3) won his first two UFC fights before falling to Court McGee via split decision this past August. Along with his win in the TUF: The Smashes final, he also defeated fellow TUF winner Colton Smith.
Thompson (8-1) has rebounded from a 2012 loss to Matt Brown by defeating both Nah-Shon Burrell and Chris Clements. He earned his second UFC finish vs. Clements, adding to his highlight-reel KO of Dan Stittgen in his debut.
Round 1: Whittaker comes right out with a nice jab, cutting off the cage. Thompson fires off a series of strikes and follows up with a smooth kick to the body that is blocked. Nasty punch to the body by Thompson, who you know is looking to set up a head kick of some type. Switch kick by Thompson misses from “Wonder Boy.” Whittaker taking advantage of Thompson leaving his hands down. Thompson is all over Whittaker after dropping him, taking the back and just unloading on him. A few more rights and this one is all over. It was a huge right that cracked Whittaker and sent him crashing.
