UFC 168: Robbie Peralta Vs. Estevan Payan

Robbie Peralta vs. Estevan Payan

Let’s get the night started in the featherweight division, as Robbie Peralta (16-4) takes on Estevan Payan (14-4).

Peralta is 2-1 with one no-contest since joining the UFC from Strikeforce in 2011, while Payan suffered a decision loss to Jeremy Stephens this past May in his Octagon debut, snapping a eight-fight unbeaten streak.

Round 1: And for the final time in 2013, we have live UFC action underway. Let’s go! Peralta gets in close and lands a nice left-right combo, proceeding to take Payan right down to the canvas. Payan brought in the former Arizona State head wrestling coach, but that training did nothing to keep Peralta from taking him down with ease. Payan gets to his feet and lands some nice knees to the body, but he gets off-balanced and taken back down. Payan with a nice reversal, moving into the top position and in side control. Nice right hand from Payan connects from the top, followed by a short elbow. If he can do some damage over these final seconds, he could steal this round.

Round 2: Peralta throwing heavy shots, stepping in and finding his range early. Good exchange of leg kicks, and Peralta is still throwing wild shots. Not connecting, but if he does, it could be night-night for Payan. Another takedown and Payan is connecting with some solid shots from the top. Peralta rolls and gets to his feet, avoiding any further damage. Very close round and close fight through nine minutes.

Round 3: Peralta listened to his corner, as he storms out after Payan and lands a flurry. Payan goes down and Peralta follows up, getting the finish just seconds into this third and final round. What a way to finish a fight. It was a big left that first rocked Payan, followed up by some nasty ground-and-pound.
