UFC president Dana White revealed a little bit of insider information Saturday night on the FOX Sports 2 post-fight show for UFC 165.
The main event of the card between UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson almost didn’t make it to the decisive fifth round, according to White.
“Jones had a huge cut on his face,” White said. “The doctors were going to stop the fight before the fifth round, but Jon and (referee John) McCarthy both begged them to not stop the fight.”
During the early stages of the match, Jones suffered a nasty cut over his right eye and was continually punished through the remainder of the fight by his challenger. For his own efforts, “Bones” bruised Gustafsson’s face, as well.
Both fighters were transported to the local hospital after the 25-minute war that went to Jones on all three scorecards.
