Two Straight Finishes For Dustin Poirier After Lightweight Return

ufc fight night 68

It didn’t matter to Dustin Poirier that Yancy Medeiros came in over-weight for their lightweight contest Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 68.

Getting to compete in his home state of Louisiana for the first time since 2010, Poirier made sure the 155-pound division was on notice, stopping Medeiros in the opening round.

“I want a Top-10 opponent next,” he said. “I want to take some time off, but in 2015, Dustin Poirier will be a Top-10 lightweight.”

After dropping Medeiros early in the fight, Poirier (18-4) tried for the submission finish. When that didn’t work, he went back to striking, doubling him over with a body shot before putting forth several uncontested lefts and rights.

Since a loss to Conor McGregor last year, Poirier has finished both Medeiros and Carlos Diego Ferreira in the first round. He is 5-1 overall in his last six.

“I love what I do,” he said. “I was draining myself at 145 and I feel like myself at 155.

“It feels really good to fight at this weight and feels good to be home.”
