Due to an injury, a planned prelim fight between featherweights Diego Brandao and Brian Ortega has been removed from UFC Fight Night: Miocic vs. Maldonado.
Brandao suffered an undisclosed injury, and due to the event taking place on May 31 from Sao Paulo, Brazil, officials are not able to sign a replacement to meet Ortega.
The card features a main event between Stipe Miocic and Fabio Maldonado, and has undergone some serious reconstruction. Originally, Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen – coaches on The Ultimate Fighter Brazil 3 – were expected to headline the card from the Ibirapuera Gymnasium in Brazil.
That fight, though, was scratched and moved to a later day. Junior dos Santos and Miocic were tabbed to replace Silva-Sonnen, but the former UFC heavyweight champion suffered a hand injury and was knocked out. Maldonado agreed to move up from light heavyweight and take on Miocic.
Brandao (18-9) has gone 4-2 during his time with the UFC, including winning a season of The Ultimate Fighter. Ortega (8-0) was look to make his debut after claiming the Resurrection Fighting Alliance featherweight title earlier this year.
