TUF 19 Finale: Frankie Edgar Vs. BJ Penn

tuf 19 finale

Frankie Edgar vs. BJ Penn

We’ve reached the main event, and the third encounter, between former UFC champions Frankie Edgar and BJ Penn.

Edgar (16-4-1) snapped a three-fight losing skid last July when he defeated Charles Oliveira. Prior to that, his last seven fights had all been either for a UFC title or in defense of one.

Penn (16-9-2) hasn’t won since knocking out Matt Hughes in 2010, leaving him 0-2-1 in his last three.

Round 1: Penn was very emotional coming out and he quickly takes the center of the Octagon. He’s standing on his toes and Edgar is taking advantage, snapping off shots to the body. Penn tries to catch him with the clinch, but fails. Another attempt at the clinch. Edgar shoots for a single-leg, Penn pulls guard, but Edgar wants nothing to do with the ground game. He stands up, drops back down and is inside the guard with three minutes to go. Again, Edgar stands and pounces down, back in the guard. Penn throws up a side head kick from the bottom, while Edgar is peppering his legs with shots from top. Herb Dean stands them up with under a minute to go. Edgar lands with the left hook and gets in close with another combo to end the round.

FightLine scores the round 10-9 for Edgar

Round 2: Penn pushing the tempo a little more to start, but still standing very tall. Edgar grabs a leg, eats a left, and releases. Right hand connects for Edgar to the chin. Again, Edgar gets in close and scores with a takedown with no hesitation or defense. We are to the point where Penn is on his back, Edgar is standing and attacking, and we have little action. Very weird to see such a defensive-minded Penn inside the Octagon. Edgar postures up and lands some of the most powerful shots so far, teeing off with rights and short elbows to the face.

Round 3: Penn’s corner told him to win this round big, but he looks exhausted at this point. And, as usual, Edgar has no trouble pushing the pedal to the floor. Edgar mixing in kicks now to keep Penn off balance. Like the first and second, Edgar with an easy takedown and into the guard. Penn has swelling on his right eye and issues with the left, as his face has been a punching bag. Huge cut now from Edgar’s elbows on the face of Penn, who is bleeding profusely. This one might not be lasing much longer, as Edgar is hammering him with shots. Edgar doing everything and anything he wants, and the ref warns Penn to do something. That’s it, this one is all over, as Edgar improves to 3-0 against Penn.
