TUF 18 Finale: Maynard vs. Diaz Live Results & Discussion

Tonight, live on FOX Sports 1 and Sportsnet 360, airs the finale of Season 18 of The Ultimate Fighter, coached by Ronda Rousey and Team Tate. The men’s finale includes a show down between Team Alpha Male fighter Chris Holdsworth and the British prospect Davey Grant. In the women’s finale, first pick Julianna Pena takes on last pick and six time world boxing champion Jessica Rakoczy. In the main event, we see Nate Diaz taking on Gray Maynard to complete a trilogy between the two lightweights. Stay tuned for live results starting from the bottom of the page up!

Nate Diaz vs. Gray Maynard

Round One:

Maynard takes the center. Diaz throwing out his jab and two left straights. Maynard responds with a right hook of his own. Maynard continues to stalk down Diaz, eating a jab but landing an overhand. He changes levels and completes a take down landing in full guard. Maynard pushes Diaz towards the cage. Diaz rolls to his side and works his way up to his feet. Diaz completes a very nice hip throw but Maynard ends up on top a fter the scramble. Diaz is quick to get back to his feet. He initiates a clinch, lands a knee and then unloads a right hook. THey separate. Maynard eats a left that drops Maynard. He appears to be hurt. Diaz swarms him. Maynard is backing up. Diaz is teeing off on him! Connecting hard with lefts and rights! Maynard isn’t covering up or throwing back! Combination after combination! The referee stops the fight!

Jessica Rakoczy vs. Julianna Pena [TUF 18 Women's Final]

Referee: Mario Yamasaki

Round One:

Right out of the gate Pena charges forward throwing wild strikes looking to close the distance. She clinches against the cage and immediately gets the fight to the ground. Pena looks to pass guard and move to side control. Pena postures up to land some big strikes but is kicked far away by Rakoczy who returns to her feet. Rakoczy is once again clinched with against the cage. They battle for position while exchanging knees. Rakoczy gets off the cage but remains in the clinch – Pena backs her up and throws her back down ending up in half guard. Pena is hunting to step over her half guard while peppering her with strikes. Pena postures up and starts landing some bombs. She stands to her feet and throws Rakoczy’s leg’s aside coming down and into side control. She moves into mount and continues her assault. Rakoczy tries to throw her legs up to pull Pena off of her but it’s ineffective. Penna is landing punch and punch mixing it up with elbows. Rakoczy is surviving but is having a hard time defending. 10 seconds left.  Yamasaki stops the fight!

Chris Holdsworth vs. Davey Grant [TUF 18 Men's Final]

Referee: Yves Lavigne

Round One:

Grant lands a low kick to start the fight. Holdsworth extends two jabs while Grant lands another outside low kick. Holdsworth wings an overhand right, misses, but drives through and clinches with Grant pushing him against the cage. Grant turns him and separates, teeing off with some wild hooks. Holdsworth regains composure and turns off the cage. Holdsworth lands a hard overhand right that has Grant backing up. He connects again with a left and follows it up with a clinch, landing a knee to the body while they battle for position. Holdsworth lands a body shot and then separates. They trade hooks and clinch, both landing knees to the body before separating. Chris goes high with a kick but just misses. Grant explodes forward, landing a hook to the body and forces a clinch but is spun against the cage. Holdsworth changes levels for a single leg. Grant defends and they separate. Grant throws a 1-2 combination, following it up with another straight right that Holdsworth slips. Holdsworth forces the clinch once again but is spun around by Grant. Grant tries to throw Holdsworth down but fails, resulting in Holdsworth landing on top of Grant. Holdsworth postures p looking to land a hard shot but isn’t able to land anything significant before the bell.

Round Two:

Holdsworth goes high with a kick early, connecting but has his kick caught. Grant looked to turn it into a take down but Holdsworth was able to get back to his feet. Grant lands a hook to the body followed by a push kick. Holdsworth grabs hold of a single leg and completes the take down. After a scramble followed by a ninja choke attempt from Grant, Holdsworth takes side control. Grant’s nose is bleeding pretty badly now. Grant turns to his side in attempts to improve position but ends up giving up his back to Holdsworth. Holdsworth sinks in in the rear naked choke! Grant taps!

Jessamyn Duke vs. Peggy Morgan

Referee: Kim Winslow

Round One:

Duke lands consecutive jabs to the body, following them up with a straight right to the body and a left hook up high. Duke with a push kick. Morgan begins to press forward looking to take away her rhythm, pressing her against the cage but Duke is working some good knees against the cage. Duke gets underhooks and spins Morgan, proceeding to land rights to the body as they battle in the clinch. Duke sinks in a guillotine and pulls guard. It seems deep. Morgan breaks free. Duke moves her legs into a high guard, transitioning into a triangle attempt. Morgan’s head is trapped and she’s eating elbows from Duke – one minute remaining. Duke tightens up the triangle landing more big elbows from her back to close out the round.

Round Two:

Duke continues to land her left hand in both the form of a hook and cross but Morgan is having success with her jab, effectively marking up the face of Duke. Morgan is striking effectively backing Duke up and taking away a bit of her rhythm. Duke using great footwork getting in and out of the pocket without taking much significant damage but Mogran’s jab is starting to work for her. Duke grabs a Thai-clinch and lands a hard knee to the body. They trade jabs. Duke is switching it up with her strikes going from body and head, creating openings for power head strikes. Duke goes to the body with her right and over the top with her left, landing hard with her left hook backing Morgan up. The round ends with Duke stuffing a take down of Morgan which draws a reaction of the crowd after a scramble.

Round Three:

Morgan starts out the round aggressively, landing a few punches but gets tagged by a right cross as she’s coming in. Duke once again throws her right to the body followed by her left over the top. Duke goes to the body with a kick. Morgan jabs but eats another body kick. Duke follows it up with another body kick. Morgan grabs hold of a Thai-clinch and works some knees. Duke breaks free and connects with two hard rights followed by a left hook that have Morgan backing up against the cage. Duke clinches with Morgan against the cage. Morgan grabs double under hooks and looks to get a better position but Duke grabs hold of her neck with a schoolyard type headlock. They stumble to the ground and Morgan ends up landing on the back of Duke with 2:20 in the round. For the large part of a minute Morgan wasn’t able to land anything significant or find a submission – she attempts a rear naked after some peppering ground and pound but Duke is able to spin and obtain half guard. After a bit of non-action, Winslow stands them up. Duke immediately goes for it following the stand up, throwing rights and lefts and grabbing a Thai-collar throwing a knee to the body. Just before the bell Duke lands a left.

Roxanne Modafferi vs. Raquel Pennington

Round One:

Modafferi works her jab early looking to establish range while utilizing good footwork. Pennington responds with a straight right. Modafferi presses forward alternating between left and right straights though fanning on most of them. Lots of feints being exchanged. Modafferi continues to press forward winging combinations, though low power she is certainly the busier fighter. Pennington counters with a hard right and follows it up with a low kick. Modafferi presses forward once again alternating between straight punches and jabs. Pennington hits a side kick. Modafferi engages in a clinch and presses Pennington against the cage who lands a nice uppercut with her back to the cage.  Pennington is able to obtain double under hooks and turn Modafferi around while landing a punch off the break. Modafferi lands a body kick in the center of the cage. Right before the bell Pennington connects with a hard straight.

Round Two:

Modafferi opens the round with a spinning back fist but Pennington is taking the advice of her corner to go after it and is beginning to turn it on. Modafferi looks to stop her momentum by closing the distance and once again pressing her against the cage. Pennington secures underhooks once more after stuffing a take down attempt but gives them up to land an uppercut and right hand over the top forcing Modafferi to disengage. Modafferi throws a half hearted spinning back kick that is countered by a jab-straight right combination. Modafferi changes levels for a take down, Pennington stuffs and threatens with a choke. Modafferi pulls guard to defend against the submission. Modafferi throws her legs up for a high guard. Modafferi throwing short elbows from her back. Pennington tries to slam her to break the guard. Pennington postures up breaking free and begins to work her right hand from full guard. Modafferi looking to set up an arm bar. She throws her legs up and swivels her hips. Pennington stacks on her and escapes, continuing to work punches with her right hand. Modafferi kicks Pennington off and forces a stand up. Pennington times a left hook that looks to of hurt Modafferi. Modafferi charges forward looking for a thai clinch but is backed up by Pennington’s strikes.

Round Three:

Modafferi changes levels for a take down after some feints which is thwarted by the sprawl of Pennington. Pennington presses forward setting up her right with jabs and low kicks. Modafferi continuing to move side to side throwing feints while trying to land at a volume but Pennington is landing the more powerful shots when she lands. Pennington is cutting off the cage well and punishing Modafferi for her mistakes as she lands a powerful right after a failed spinning attempt from Modafferi. Modafferi shoots for a take down but is sprawled, though Modafferi pulls guard again. Pennington lands some big hammerfists to the body – Modafferi immediately looks to pull Pennington’s neck down for a guillotine. Pennington defends, Modafferi works her high guard once again. Pennington once again lands hammerfists to the body before Modafferi looks to isolate an arm for an arm bar. With no fear of her opponent’s submission attempts, Pennington works her ground and pound. Modafferi is able to sit up and stand to her feet but Pennington’s neck gets trapped in a guillotine on her way up. It’s tight. Modafferi falls backwards, Pennington lands in full mount. Final 10 seconds. Modafferi survives!

Maxim Blanco vs. Akira Corossani

Referee: Mario Yamasaki

Round One:

Blanco immediately level changes for the take down, not wasting any time trying to find his rhythm. Corassani works his way to his feet, one hand on the mat and eats a huge knee from Blanco. The fight is paused. The doctor steps in to look at Corossani who claims he cannot see out of his left eye. The fight is stopped.
